John Newton penned the words to “Amazing Grace” around 1764 after he survived a near-death experience on a slave-trading ship that nearly capsized, after which he became a priest. His words were set to music by William Walker who composed the hymn tune NEW BRITAIN, first published in “Southern Harmony in 1847. The hymn is extremely influential in religious and folk music, crossing over successfully into secular music. One of the most recognizable and beloved songs in history, Daniel Carter’s setting has a traditional southern folk song feel. Arranged for solo voice, fiddle obbligato, and piano and is suitable for worship, devotionals, concert settings, and music recitals. The fiddle part is included on the last page of the score.
