John Leland’s (1754-1841) descriptive and powerful text captivated Joshua Leavitt (1794-1873) who composed a plaintive melody about the Savior’s pleading in our behalf on Judgement Day. This public domain Appalachian folk hymn tune titled PLEADING SAVIOR was first published in “Christians Lyre” in 1830 in the Sacred Harp tradition. Arranged with a descriptive, emotive piano accompaniment that underscores the elegance and depth of the lamenting singer, the words conclude with a peaceful return to the Savior’s loving arms. Arranged for medium-range solo voice, high-range solo voice, and SSAA women’s chorus and piano.
